Norwegian Air Shuttle Launches Budget Flights from NYC
New York (JFK) to London Gatwick (LGW) for £150
In case you missed the news last week, Norwegian Air Shuttle just launched a new transatlantic route between London and New York City with fares starting at £150 ($256) one-way.
Although it’s difficult to come by these low fares due to low supply, high demand, and the fact cheaper flights are nearly impossible to find during high season, The Guardian ran an independent price verification check and noted the cheapest New York to London legs are largely in January and February 2015.
The airline is also opening up routes from Los Angeles and Ft. Lauderdale as a low-cost alternative to the competition.
What does this mean?
This means there’s a viable budget option for getting to study abroad spring 2015 destinations on a budget…so long as passengers don’t mind paying an extra £35 ($60) for a meal and checking in a 45 lb. bag! WSA Europe recommends packing a lunch, however 45 lbs. of checked luggage should be plenty for a semester or two.
As Norwegian grows its fleet and expands services, it’s possible other budget airlines will fall in step. While carriers like Ryanair have expressed interest in launching US flights “for under €10,” this likely won’t become a reality for at least another 5 years as the company acquires the necessary long-haul aircraft.
In the meantime, Norwegian offers great value, so long as you book well in advance!
This past weekend a group of my friends and I decided to go to Budapest, but wanted to go with a group because we were unsure of what we wanted to do and how to plan our trip. Booking the trip through WSA was the best idea we ever had. It was basically all planned out for us (excluding flights). It was great because there were plenty of things planned for us that were included in the package, but there was also a bit of free time for us to explore the city and do the things we were most interested in. I really enjoyed the caving and thermal baths we visited during our trip! Also the hostel that was booked for us through WSA was great and our tour guide, Bogi, was amazing! I would definitely recommend this trip to everyone and am happy to say that I will be booking more trips with WSA in the future!Danielle Maclain, Concordia University - Irvine ~ AIFS Richmond, Spring 2015
