A day in Orvieto
Posted by Andy Steves in on September 6, 2011.
An hour and a half from Rome, the town of Orvieto sits in the heart of tufa cliffs in Umbria. The town has developed over the last three thousand years and today it is home to one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Italy.
We spent the day touring the city, starting with the underground city of Orvieto. The town is set upon a series of 12,000 caves and on a tour of “Orvieto Underground” we had the opportunity to make our way through the winding cave system that developed over the last 2500 years.
At the end of the tour, we climbed up a narrow staircase into the sunlight. After being underground for an hour, the surrounding Umbrian countryside looked particularly stunning. We spent the afternoon exploring the medieval town and stopped to buy pasta and wine. We topped off the day with a classic Italian meal and left the peaceful Orvieto to head back to the craziness of Rome.
I traveled to Prague with my friends on a weekend trip, and going there I knew absolutely nothing about the city. Signing up for WSA was the best decision ever, because not only did I learn so much about Prague but I also had SO much fun! Our tour guide Adi planned out the whole weekend for...Pauline Blatt, University of Notre Dame ~ Notre Dame Global Gateway, Rome, Summer Break 2016
