A day in Orvieto
Posted by Andy Steves in on September 6, 2011.
An hour and a half from Rome, the town of Orvieto sits in the heart of tufa cliffs in Umbria. The town has developed over the last three thousand years and today it is home to one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Italy.
We spent the day touring the city, starting with the underground city of Orvieto. The town is set upon a series of 12,000 caves and on a tour of “Orvieto Underground” we had the opportunity to make our way through the winding cave system that developed over the last 2500 years.
At the end of the tour, we climbed up a narrow staircase into the sunlight. After being underground for an hour, the surrounding Umbrian countryside looked particularly stunning. We spent the afternoon exploring the medieval town and stopped to buy pasta and wine. We topped off the day with a classic Italian meal and left the peaceful Orvieto to head back to the craziness of Rome.
I had an absolutely amazing time on my WSA trip to Krakow, Poland. I felt like a got a lot out of my money and it was so nice not to have to worry about anything because WSA takes care of it all. Our guide was absolutely fantastic and was there with us for everything we needed-it was great to have someone around with you who knew the city so well. This is definitely a trip I will never forget. I already want to start planning my next WSA trip. What amazing destination to pick next is the hard part!Alison Wendler, Universsity of Washington ~ National University of Ireland, Galway, Spring 2016
