“You eat your hamburger like an American”

"Thanks, I guess" I responded as I sheepishly put my hamburger back down on the plate.
If there's one thing the French excel at, it is bacon-egg-cheeseburgers. While they'll very nearly break your wallet, they've also evidently developed an attached etiquette. The top bun sits a magnificent 6 inches off the plate and it's quite a mouthful. At home, I'll compress that tower 'o burger into a more manageable 2 inches and bite into it. But my friend informed that's definitely NOT how it's done as we enjoyed an afternoon at a cafe on Montorgueil, one of my favorite pedestrian streets in Paris. The steak knife by my plate was apparently not there for decoration. Consider yourself warned--use your silverware when downing hamburgers in Frahnce!
